Sequential Augmented Assembly of Interlocking Timber Elements for Circular Wood Construction

Development of new timber construction techniques has mainly focused on the hybridization of wood with other materials to improve the bearing capacity through integration with steel plates and fasteners. The advantages of embodied carbon in wood constructions are often threatened by the burning demolishing process, e. g., if the wood is incinerated at the end of buildings' life. To remedy this, reduction in joint complexity increases the reusability of building components such as beams, as in our case short linear timber element, for disassembly. To do so, a functioning demonstrator reflects on how innovative structures are realized through synthesizing of interlocking joinery, and how augmented-reality assembly could enable the circular economy in wood. Nevertheless, the structural applications of timber construction are ever expanding, and it is of the utmost importance to broaden this essential dimension of industry and develop novel and acquisitive value-added design with high-performance application. We employ a design-fabrication-construction strategy to fill the gap between designers or engineers with local practitioners and advance wood machinery. This leads us to a certain knowledge on digitalized process and fabrication before being deployed in non-experimental and industrial applications.
